The New Indian Express chatted with me about my book, Disco Dancer.
Terming the film directed by B Subhash and starring Mithun Chakraborty, “insane but brilliant”, Pal insists that the albeit the film is unintentionally funny in parts, his book does not show the musical in a poor light. “They (Harper Collins) wanted some seminal books on Indian films. And you cannot define ‘seminal’ by just ‘good’ films. Disco Dancer was spectacularly modern yet awful,” says Pal. The film had all the clinches’ associated with Hindi films during the days of socialist India, he adds. “It had all the terrible elements of the 80s cinema like an angry young man, an evil rich man and last but not the least a good and suffering mother.”
