Playwright Anuvab Pal also notes the indifference of authors to love stories. “If one looks at contemporary books, the important ones talk of societies in transition. I don’t really see the old-fashioned love story. Look at the Pulitzer list. Not a single love story! Even locally, the big hits are either about weightloss, self-help books or those by Chetan Bhagat. I think, the interest of authors are more socio-economic and political than romantic. To write about love, you have to disconnect from present reality because it’s too harsh. War or family doesn’t agree or whatever. Writers today want to engage with the world. So, love is part of much larger things,” Anuvab says.
